Extra Time, Penalty Shootouts and the Away Goals Rule

When is there extra time?

Only in knockout matches that must produce a winner. League matches end after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, and a draw stands.

Extra time is two halves of 15 minutes. The score at the end of extra time is shown on match pages with AET (after extra time).

Penalty shootouts

If the tie is still level, each team takes five penalties alternately. If the teams are still level after five each, the shootout continues one kick each until one team scores and the other misses. Shootout goals do not count in the match score; we show them separately (PEN).

The away goals rule

For decades, in two-legged ties, goals scored away from home counted double when the aggregate score was level. UEFA abolished the rule in its club competitions from the 2021/22 season; level aggregate scores now go to extra time and, if needed, penalties. Some domestic and other competitions may still use their own rules.
